Frequently Ask Questions
Speech-Language Pathology & Cognitive Therapy
Q: Why does a Speech Therapist help with swallowing? A: The muscles used for speaking are the same muscles used for swallowing. Our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are experts in the anatomy and physiology of the throat and upper airway, allowing them to diagnose and treat dysphagia (swallowing disorders) to prevent choking and pneumonia.
Q: Can Speech Therapy help with memory loss or confusion? A: Yes. This is known as Cognitive-Communication Therapy. We work on “Executive Functioning” tasks—such as memory, attention, and problem-solving—to help residents navigate their daily lives more safely and independently.
Q: How do you help residents who cannot speak at all? A: We utilize Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This can range from simple picture boards to high-tech speech-generating devices. Our goal is to ensure every resident has a “voice” to communicate their needs and feelings.
Q: Is Speech Therapy covered by Medicare or Medicaid? A: Yes, Speech-Language Pathology is a covered service under Medicare Part A (during a skilled stay) and Part B (outpatient/long-term), as well as the Ohio Medicaid program, when it is deemed medically necessary by a physician.
